The Work of the Gospel
When Heidi and Rolland Baker first settled in Mozambique, they settled in the capital of Maputo to begin the work of the Gospel buried deep in their hearts. They started several bases including the one at Zimpeto. It would be the place the Bakers began to reinforce the Stop for the One lifestyle by pulling kids from the trash heap, showering them with love, and showing them the power of Jesus Christ. Now, 20+ years later, Iris Zimpeto is home to just under 175 children!
At the beginning of this year, everything seemed crazy and uncertain with the global pandemic and unrest in Mozambique. Yet in the midst of this, the Zimpeto family's response was to make the difficulties an opportunity to encourage our children to raise their level of intimacy with God, discover how talented they are, and affirm their identity in God. This has made them feel even more loved and secure.
Our teenagers are more committed to God and they are the ones who carry out activities with younger children. It is beautiful to see children helping in community activities such as preparing boxes of food for the community in need with hearts full of love and generosity.
We also created an environment of great fun doing different activities every week including sports, a talent show, art, singing contests, dances, Bible games, an ‘Encounter with God’ conference, and game days. Although the children are aware of what is happening across the world, it is not having a negative impact on their emotions.
It is really amazing to see what God is doing in the hearts of our children and in all of Iris Zimpeto — especially in this difficult moment with few people to help. We are very encouraged by seeing God move us further forward and to see how He is leading us to the time of a great Harvest of the best fruits. We are so excited about this!
